Patek releases a Longines (not really, but so close) in the 5226 Calatrava

Longines has been going again to their roots, making heritage items from their classic designs. This is extensively agreed to be “fairly good”. Patek has finished the reverse, discontinuing the Nautilus individuals cherished, and introducing a Calatrava that appears, effectively, like an imitation Longines.

The newly introduced 5226 Patek Calatrava for 2022 Watches and Wonders is with out query, classic impressed.

The dial is textured, which seems to be just like classic watches which have been uncovered to water. The lume is cream-colored to mimic classic tritium. The dial is grey with a black minute ring, untextured.

The date wheel has even been thought of, a customized one with black background and cream numerals printed on prime to match the dial coloration.

So what went incorrect?

It’s a Patek as a result of it has the motion and the identify on the dial, for a similar cause that the Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch is an Omega. It wears the identify on the dial.

But the styling is all Longines. Specifically, the Longines Spirit

Here’s the factor. I believe Patek missed in a number of methods:

The dial numeral font is dangerous. The 6 and 9 are extra rounded and don’t match the 0 in 10. The minute ring numerals are microgramma or eurostile font, and really feel misplaced on a watch with cream lume, though the font does date from 1952. And to make issues worse, the numerals on the customized date wheel are Helvetica-ish.

Patek are imagined to be one of the best of one of the best. One of the nice difficulties of constructing a watch is being opinionated, and understanding what traits make your watch identifiable, even when the model weren’t on the dial.

You can spot a Moser from 20 ft away and understand it’s a Moser. Looking at this, you’d be forgiven for pondering it’s Longines or Tissot, each of whom may have made this watch.
