Waltham is back from the grave, with the Field and Marine Trench watch

Waltham Watch Company started life in 1849. It died in 1957, to be bought off to 3 manufacturers, together with Invicta. In the Seventies, it merged with different Swiss producers, in a federation that itself died in 1981. And now, it’s again. For the revival of this historic model, the primary watch is reviving the 1918 Field and Marine watch made for World War 1.

Back in 1918, watches have been made a bit otherwise. Traditionally, watchmakers would make the motion, after which case makers would make an array of instances, and jewelers would assemble them within the outlets. Frequently, the dial would put on the title of the jeweler as an alternative of the motion model.

The unique Field and Marine watch was a Waltham motion in a case made by Depollier. It was one of many early makes an attempt at a “Waterproof and Dustproof Watch”.

To make the unique waterproof, the bezel was double-clinched, to lock the bezel in place. To tighten the watch case, there was a particular “chuck key” to torque the bezel and again. The crown used a particular bayonet crown, the place it pushes down previous crown guards and has a flange that rotates below them to lock.

The newly reborn Waltham Field and Marine Treach watch shouldn’t be a re-creation of the unique. It would have been straightforward to simply remake the outdated watch with none adjustments. Instead, the concept is to protect the design, whereas updating it to right now’s requirements and high quality.

The new model makes use of an analogous bayonet locking crown, nevertheless it’s been completed higher. This isn’t stunning, it’s not 1919 anymore. The crown has a brass ring that reveals when it’s locked or unlocked.

The case again makes use of a compressor again to extend water resistance to 300 meters. Compressor instances didn’t exist in 1919, so this can be a welcome enchancment.
